Ingredients

1 tsp sugar (or 1 sugar cube)
3 dashes Angostura bitters
1 slice orange slice
2 Maraschino cherries, plus 1 tsp syrup from the jar
45 ml Brandy or cognac
ice cubes
90 ml Lemon-lime soda (e.g. Sprite), chilled

Method

Put the sugar, bitters, orange slice, one cherry and the cherry syrup in a sturdy old fashioned glass. Muddle gently until the sugar dissolves and the orange releases its juice.
Fill the glass with ice and pour in the brandy.
Top with the lemon-lime soda and stir briefly.
Garnish with the second cherry and serve.

Tips

Contains alcohol. Order it "sour" in Wisconsin and you get grapefruit soda or sour mix instead of the sweet lemon-lime.
Supper clubs often garnish with a skewer of cherries and orange, or even a pickled mushroom or olive.
Sweet and fizzy means it goes down fast: sip slowly and alternate with water.
